The
Utah Olympic Oval is located in Kearns, about 14 miles (22
km) from downtown Salt Lake City. Because of its elevation,
Utah's dry air and the building's design, the Oval is regarded
as the fastest ice in the world. The facility's signature
is a unique, cable-suspended system that helps eliminate the
need for massive trusses ordinarily required to support the
structure. The Oval is one of 19 buildings worldwide designated
as a LEED-rated building by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The LEED rating system evaluates environmental performance
from a \"whole building\" perspective over a building's life
cycle. The Oval has initiated a wide range of programs designed
to teach and promote skating. These programs will continue
after the Games and the Oval will no doubt become a popular
public recreational facility in the Salt Lake Valley.
