Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium is located on the University of Utah campus, about 3 miles (5 km) east of downtown Salt Lake City. In addition to the audience of 44,500 spectators, 3.5 billion people around the world are expected to watch the pageantry of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies on television. The climax of the Opening Ceremony will be the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, which will be visible across the Salt Lake Valley for the duration of the Games.
