中國冬季奧運首面金牌出爐 楊揚女子500速滑奪后冠

　　中國自1992年首次參加冬季奧運會以來，終於總算突破零面金牌的局面，這面難能可貴的金牌由女子速滑好手楊揚獲得，隊友王春露則獲得銅牌一面，保加利亞選手里達諾娃獲得第二。此外短道速滑男子一千公尺決賽項目，澳洲選手布萊德柏利歷經曲折離奇的競賽後，也幸運為澳洲摘下冬運史上首面金牌。
　　中國大陸在前三屆冬奧運中，共獲得14面獎牌(10銀、4銅)。中國大陸速度滑冰在賽前就是極被看好會贏得金牌的優勢項目，楊揚曾五次獲得世界冠軍，這次能夠獲得金牌，可以說是預料之中。
　　二十八歲的澳洲選手布萊德柏利在滑進最後一圈賽程時，排名仍居第五，但因為排名在前的美國選手歐諾與中國的李佳軍相撞，使得李佳軍摔跤，而歐諾又再和南韓的安賢洙撞上而雙雙跌跤，連累了排名第四的加拿大選手特爾柯特，意外讓排名最後的布萊德柏利輕鬆跨越終點線奪得金牌。美國選手歐諾抱走銀牌；加拿大選手特爾柯特則贏得銅牌。李佳軍被取消資格。(2002/2/17 潔絲敏)
