本屆主辦國英格蘭並沒有像前幾屆的主辦國大肆興建世界盃專用球場，而是利用國內現有的多個可容納超過五萬人的大球場作為比賽場地。

　　籌備工作雖已做得盡善盡美，但在決賽前四個月，雷米金盃卻在西敏寺中央大堂(Westminster's Central Hall)展出時被盜去。英國警方全力尋找，七天後，一隻警犬在倫敦郊區一座公園裡找到用舊報紙包著的金杯。

　　本屆世界盃的水準非常高，巴西的表現依然出色，葡萄牙的快速進攻足球極具娛樂性，匈牙利的足球也似是有復興的跡象，保加利亞充滿活力的打法也頗為吸引。這屆也有不少令人難忘的賽事，尤其是北韓的兩場。

　　這支首度參賽的亞洲隊，在分組預賽不但以1-0逼和上屆第三名智利，還以1-0擊敗義大利，創造世足賽史上的特大號冷門，並創下亞洲隊伍最佳的打入八強戰績。

　　後來在八強賽雖然以3-5敗給葡萄牙，也是因經驗不足，才被葡隊巨星「黑豹」尤塞比奧連進四球的神奇演出才被逆轉，北韓與尤塞比奧才是本屆比賽的真英雄。
