首次參加世界盃會內賽的中國大陸，繼首戰以0-2敗給了哥斯大黎加後，8日迎戰同組的種子球隊巴西。比賽結果一如人們賽前所料，巴西以4-0大勝中國，篤定晉級十六強；而中國大陸成為本屆世界盃第四支在小組賽結束後出局的球隊。

繼法國、阿根廷和葡萄牙後，義大利成為第四支意外失足的世界盃熱門球隊。在8日傍晚舉行的G組第二輪比賽中，義大利在先入一球的情況下，卻在3分鐘內被對手克羅埃西亞連扳兩球；再加上義大利兩次破門都被裁判判定越位無效，最終義大利以1-2爆冷門負於克羅埃西亞，不但失去提前晉級十六強的機會，更面臨可能淘汰的命運。

南非vs.斯洛維尼亞的比賽堪稱為本屆世界盃開賽以來最沈悶的一場比賽，開賽僅4分鐘，南非諾姆維特接到隊友開出的自由球，頭錘沒有命中，但球卻意外地打在大腿上反彈入網。南非憑藉這個意外之喜以1-0領先對手。
