世界盃新生-中國大陸隊，4日於南韓光州球場初次亮相。面對球風強悍的哥斯大黎加隊，大陸隊則顯得有些怯場、缺乏信心，上半場兩隊你來我往，力保不失分。到了下半場，大陸隊明顯出現體力不繼的現象，後防更是危機重重。

果不其然，哥國在四分鐘內就讓大陸隊俯首稱臣，第61分鐘，哥國高梅茲在亂軍之中左腳勁射，率先破網得分；緊接著第65分鐘，大陸隊後防再次出現危機，讓哥國獲得角球機會，後衛萊特頭槌得分。終場，大陸隊以0-2丟掉首役，同時也讓大陸8億球迷心碎。

日本「神風特攻隊」4日在埼玉體育場迎戰「紅魔鬼」比利時，上半場兩隊都未能突破彼此的防線，以0-0平分秋色。比賽進行到下半場，兩隊大開殺戒，各自攻破球門兩次，終場以2-2握手言和。日本隊拿下在世界盃歷史性的第一分。

亞洲猛虎出籠囉！地主南韓隊4日在釜山球場出戰「東歐鐵騎」波蘭隊，展現快、狠、準球風，陣中老將黃善洪與柳相鐵更是有超乎水準的優異表現，分別在第26、53分鐘各自攻下一分，率領南韓隊以2-0擊敗波蘭。這難能可貴的勝利，不但是本屆世界盃亞洲球隊的第一勝，更是南韓舉國上下盼了許久的第一勝。
